YOU’RE ALAN PARTRIDGE
14 Dec 2016

Image may contain: 1 person, sitting and indoor

Alan Partridge as an Archetype and Spiritual Healer. Talk by Sarah Janes of The Explorers CLUB.

He may seem an unlikely spiritual guru, but Alan Partridge does in fact offer an enormous amount of potential for self-reflection and psychological development.
As we explore the patterns set in his childhood and their spiralling path into adult employment and relationships, we discover a wealth of material to deepen our understanding of ourselves and others.
Archetypal journeys, narratives and imaginings assist us in our quest for identity, deep truth, the Self. Playing out scenarios and identifying with new characters can help us to see our story from different perspectives. This has the potential to release us from habits and patterns that keep us stuck at a certain point. And this is how Alan Partridge can help you.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION: We Come From Garageland
22 Jul – 21 Aug 2016

13615296_823999401033474_1310022836385411799_n

Shambolic, adrenaline-fuelled, loud and snotty, garage punk is the sound of bands who don’t give a flying f-hole about their limitations. Born in the 1960s, the ugly third brother of surf and bubblegum pop has rumbled in basement clubs for the last fifty years. From bands such as The Sonics, The Seeds, and The Downliners Sect, it coursed through the veins of The MC5, The Ramones and was revived in the 1980s by groups such as The Milkshakes, The Mummies and The Gories.

Wave upon wave of bands have come since, and now find a spiritual home in a network of clubs and festivals in the UK. Hastings’ own Frat Cave takes place about once a month at the Royal Standard pub, attracting a crowd hopped up on tequila and candyfloss to bounce around to surf, garage and dirty party music. Like-minded clubs across the UK include Brighton’s Stay Sick, London’s Weirdsville and Dirty Water nights and Liverpool’s Go-Go Cage.

Photographer Jeff Pitcher has been part of the south coast garage scene for the last 25 years, but the pictures in this show date from the last twelve months. His trademark down-the-front style captures the sweaty, hedonistic atmosphere at the shows, and his photographs have been used on countless album sleeves, in magazines, and, most importantly, to revive memories blurred by booze and excitement.

We Come From Garageland is held in association with Beatwave 2016, Hastings’ biggest, free garage punk and surf music festival.

Crawley photographer Jeff Pitcher is renowned for his in-the-thick-of-it shots of the garage punk scene. To celebrate the first Beat Wave Weekender, he’s selected some of the most full-tilt shots of bands taking part in the festival, as well as a smattering of pictures of other well-known lo-fi luminaries.

GUARDIAN FEATURE
28th Oct 2015

We have been selected by The Guardian as one of the ten best record shops in the country, as chosen by a selection of writers, musicians and journalists:

This seaside shop got its name from a Stereolab song of the same title, which owners Susan and Tim love. It’s a record store with the beating heart of local culture, giving much back to the town with its handpicked favourites, old and new. You can also buy local gig tickets, have coffee and browse the music books on sale. It often feels like a warm hub of music conversation (like High Fidelity but not male-dominated or muso-snobby). You can pick up Viv Albertine’s memoirs, while listening to Last Splash by The Breeders. I blimming love it. There is a magic in the ceremony of putting a record on that I pine for in this modern world. The detail and love that goes into artwork that I not only want to listen to but frame on my wall … time passes by in a world of analogue recordings and it feels wonderful. Viva la record.

Recommended by Brigitte Aphrodite, whose show, My Beautiful Black Dog, tours the UK from 14 November
